Dendrobium stratiotes are found in western New Guinea, the Moluccas, the Sunda Islands and Sulawesi. It grows on trees in forests at lower elevations. They bloom in the summer and fall. Dendrobium stratiotes like plenty of light but cannot stand the full noonday rays of the sun. Filtered or diffused light is recommended. They usually do best when placed so that they can get the early morning sun but are shaded from about 10 a.m. onwards in the Summertime. In the Winter they can usually stand the sun’s rays up to 11.30 a.m. They like temperatures of 85 and 55 degrees and do best with humidity in the 65-90% range. Too dry air inhibits their growth. These are 4’ blooming size orchids but are currently not in bloom.
